Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, lies between Vienna and Venice, not far away from the Adriatic Sea. Its city region has always lain at the intersection of important transport routes leading from northern Europe to the Adriatic Sea and from western to eastern Europe and further on to the Balkans and the Near East. Road and rail connections have traditionally had good. Not far from the city is Ljubljana Jože Pucnik Airport, the country's main airport.
Ljubljana (pop. 293,000) is one of the smallest European capitals. It’s never crowded – but also never boring. 50,000 university students give it its youthful appeal, and as an economic and cultural hub of Slovenia, it has a lot to offer to locals and visitors alike.

By car
Ljubljana is located at the crossroads of Slovenia's most important road routes. Motorway access from any of the neighbouring countries is very easy.
Road tax vignettes
Road tax vignettes must be purchased for the use of Slovenian motorways, including the Ljubljana bypass. The roads where the vignette is required are marked by special vignette signs. Vignettes can be purchased at petrol stations located in the border areas of Slovenia's neighbouring countries, at petrol stations, post offices and most newspaper kiosks in Slovenia, and at branch offices of the Automobile Association of Slovenia (AMZS) and other automobile clubs.
By train
The Ljubljana Railway Station is Slovenia's main railway station. It connects Ljubljana to Trieste, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Prague, Vienna, Graz, Budapest, Zagreb, and Belgrade. Railway is also a convenient means of transport within Slovenia, given that distances within the country are mainly short and travel costs low.

By bus
The Ljubljana Bus Station has regular services to all Slovenia's neighbouring countries and the most popular tourist destinations within the country. Bus tickets can be purchased at the counter of the Ljubljana Bus Station or online from the Ljubljana Bus Station website.

Public transport in Ljubljana
City buses
Those wishing to travel on Ljubljana city buses, operated by the Ljubljanski potniški promet (LPP) public utility company, should purchase the Urbana public transport card.
The bus fare is paid via the Urbana stored-value card (card price €2.00 + bus fare). One bus fare equals €1.20. Changing buses within 90 minutes from purchase is free-of-charge.
Ljubljana Tourist Card: Free-of-charge LPP bus fares during the entire period of the card’s validity (24, 48 or 72 hours).
BicikeLJ bicycle-sharing system
The BicikeLJ public bicycle system is available across the wider Ljubljana city centre. Bicycles can be hired practically for free.
Ljubljana Bike
In the summer and early autumn months (1 April-31 October), bicycles can be hired in the Ljubljana Bike project, led by Ljubljana Tourism.
Taxis in Ljubljana
In the centre of Ljubljana you can easily find a vacant taxi. Charges range between €0.80 and €1.50 for the starting fee and from €0.70 to €1.70 per kilometre. A taxi ride from Ljubljana Jože Pucnik Airport to Ljubljana costs from €20.00 to €45.00. Charges are lower when taxis are ordered by phone. In any case, it is advisable to enquire about the fare before the ride.

The climate of Slovenia is influenced by the Alps and the Mediterranean, except for its north-eastern part which is mostly continental. Ljubljana typically has cool and humid winters, while summers are warm and sunny thanks to Mediterranean air currents. The average temperature for July is around 20° C and around 0° C in January.
